Living life in the limelight isn’t always without its hindrances, as Drake, the Grammy-winning, rapper and actor found when he became a father. The Canadian-born star was at the forefront of paternity speculation when Sophie Brussaux, the French model and former adult-film star, announced her pregnancy. Lyrics in Pusha T’s rap fueled the controversy, with Drake finally confirming that he was the father on his 2018 album Scorpion.

Drake and Sophie Brussaux’s Relationship

Drake, real name Aubrey Drake Graham, was first spotted with Brussaux, in January 2017 while he was on his Boy Meets World Tour. Brussaux, who had worked in porn previously under the stage name ‘Rosee Divine,’ was seen cozying up to Drake at a Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam.

Brussaux, announced five months later that she was three months pregnant with Drake’s child, a statement that Drake’s reps vehemently denied. The French national hired two leading New York City attorneys to assist with paternity testing and fighting for child support from the rapper.

Social Media Issues

Brussaux claimed to have received text messages from Drake that asked her to get an abortion. Following these accusations, she demonstrated her contempt for Drake on her Instagram account. Drake fans had been blasting her, so she blocked the use of his name on her Instagram account @sophieknowsbetter.

Supposedly, she had also reported that Drake was a deadbeat dad on her Twitter account.

Rapping About Baby Adonis

Adonis was born on October 11th, 2017. However, it wasn’t the proud father who announced the birth to the world. Instead, it was fellow rapper and adversary, Pusha T, who referenced the situation on May 29th, 2018.

The track “The Story of Adidon,” which was produced by Kanye West, used lyrics that accuse Drake of trying to hide the baby:

Since you name-dropped my fiancée, let ’em know who you chose as your Beyoncé
Sophie knows better, ask your baby mother
Cleaned her up for IG, but the stench is on her
A baby’s involved, it’s deeper than rap
We talkin’ character, let me keep with the facts
You are hiding a child, let that boy come home
Deadbeat motha****a, playin’ border patrol, ooh
Adonis is your son
And he deserves more than an Adidas press run, that’s real
Love that baby, respect that girl
Forget she’s a pornstar, let her be your world
–The Story of Adidon, by Pusha T

Drake comes clean

It wasn’t till the following month in his fifth studio album ‘Scorpion’, that Drake acknowledged on ‘8 out of 10, Final Fantasy, and Emotionless’ that the rumors were true and that he and Brussaux had welcomed a baby boy into the world.

On the track, ‘Emotionless’, Drake responds to the claim that he was keeping the baby hidden:

I wasn’t hidin’ my kid from the world
I was hidin’ the world from my kid
From empty souls who just wake up and look to debate
Until you starin’ at your seed, you can never relate.
–Emotionless, by Drake

DNA test left rap star in limbo

Drake’s fans were notably stunned by these revelations. No one could understand why the 33-year-old hadn’t come forward with the news earlier. The rapper tried to put the record straight when he explained that he’d tried to sort out the paternity issue.

The star had taken a DNA test for Adonis, but when the results arrived back, they were supposedly inconclusive. Despite the fact that paternity tests are generally reliable to a confidence level of 99.9% or greater, this is a highly suspicious claim. But according to Drake, he could not tell if he was the father of Busseaux’s child or not. He blamed it on the fact that the paternity test was damaged during transit and would have to be done again to know conclusively if he was the father or not.

Either Drake couldn’t declare to the world that Adonis was his son because he didn’t know for sure, or he was holding back for some other reasons. Regardless, he and his fans were left in limbo. Drake had confided his paternity concerns to Kanye West, who was working with Pusha T at the time.

During these events, Drake was working with Adidas on a clothing collection, and they were considering an idea that used the name Adonis together with the brand name Adidas. He decided against this though; he didn’t like the idea of his son’s name being used, plus he claims he wasn’t sure at the time that his son was indeed his.

Differences resolved

Despite the delay, Drake now enjoys co-parenting with Brussaux, and their differences have been addressed. It isn’t clear how the legal paternity testing controversy was resolved, but Drake is happy to admit he is the father. He even threw a lavish party to celebrate his sons second birthday at his mansion in Toronto. The rest of the time, Adonis lives in France with his mother.
