A 5 Panel Drug Test is a urine drug test that tests for commonly used drugs like marijuana, cocaine, basic opiates including codeine, morphine, and heroin, phencyclidine (PCP), and amphetamines including methamphetamine. THC can be excluded, and alcohol, nicotine, ecstasy, oxycodone, or hydrocodone can be added. You can choose between a rapid 5 panel drug test or a lab test. This testing panel originated at the start of the modern drug testing era, in the 1980's. However, this panel test does not detect many of the drugs that are commonly used today. Specimens are sent to a SAMHSA certified laboratory for analysis, and results are reviewed by our Medical Review Officer, a licensed physician. Test results take about one business day for negatives, and three to five business days to confirm non-negatives.

Rapid 5 Panel Drug Test vs. Lab Test

The rapid 5 panel drug test is an instant version of the lab test. Are you an employer trying to decide between the 2 options? Consider these important differences:

Health Street's Instant 5 Panel drug test is a great option for companies who are trying to get their staff on the job as quickly as possible. Permitted by most states, an instant drug test (also known as a rapid test) offers the speed that employers are looking for when time is critical and the job candidates are clean of any substances. Our technology allows for our Medical Review Officer (a physician, also called an "MRO") to review instant drug tests in real time. Furthermore, if the initial screening is not negative, the specimen still gets a rigorous, certified laboratory analysis.

Some employers simply prefer the security of a certified lab test for all of their pre-employment and random drug testing services. When you order a lab-based 5 Panel, the specimen are collected and then need to travel to the lab facility, typically by overnight courier, and as such, negative results will not come back until at least the next business day.

How far back does a 5 panel drug test go?

The detection time frame can vary based on several factors. Typically, “harder” drugs like cocaine exit the system faster, while “softer” drugs like marijuana tend to stay around for a while. Metabolism, frequency of use, and body fat percentage also play a role. Each drug has its own unique period of retention in the body, and each person metabolizes and gets rid of each drug differently. However, there are some general guidelines to follow. Other than THC, the drugs in the 5 panel test can be detected in someone's urine for up to 5-7 days. Marijuana, on the other hand, can last for up to a month, particularly for heavy users.

All times below are approximated

Drug Name Urine Hair
Amphetamines 3-7 days 90 Days
Marijuana 30 Days 90 Days
Cocaine 3-7 days 90 Days
Methadone 3-7 days 90 Days
Opiates 3-7 days 90 Days

What is a 5 panel drug test and how does it work?

A 5 panel drug test is a test that can detect if someone has been using any of the 5 classes of drugs included in this testing panel. It works by checking a person's urine (or other specimen) for the metabolites left behind in a person's body after they consumed the drug. The way someone can get tested is by choosing a testing center and registering online. Once registered, an authorization barcode is instantly sent via email and text or accessed via secure company login. A map of the clinic location accompanies the registration barcode. Then, the registrant can then walk into the drug testing facility with photo ID. Status updates and test results are fast and reported securely online.

What does a 5 Panel Drug Test Test For?

THC and Cannabinoids (Marijuana)

Marijuana, a drug whose legal status is in rapid transition across the United States, is the most widely used recreational drug in the country, other than alcohol and tobacco. A 5 panel drug test tests for THC, which is the main active chemical in the Cannabis plant. The chemical, which acts upon specific receptors within the brain, is responsible for the "high" sensation that users get from smoking or otherwise ingesting it. Marijuana can impact one's ability to work, drive, or function optimally. Chronic use, teenage use, and the use of higher THC content versions like butane hash oil can be problematic.

Cocaine

Cocaine is a drug that derives from the coca plant. It is considered a brain stimulant that causes a rush of euphoric energy. Don't let the effects of the drug fool you though, Cocaine is highly addictive and can cause very serious side effects such as heart damage, nosebleeds, psychosis problems such as anxiety, depressions and paranoia, as well as ultimately, death.

Codeine, Morphine, and Heroin

Basic opiates like codeine and morphine are typically consumed as medications for pain, but they can become habit forming. Once dependent on opiates, users may turn to less expensive street drugs like heroin. When mixed with other drugs like alcohol or cocaine, these basic opioids become more dangerous.

Amphetamines

Commonly prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), pills like Adderall are actually stimulants that impact neurotransmitters to enhance focus. Methamphetamines are similar to amphetamines, but are primarily used illegally and referred to as meth or crystal meth. Crystal meth is more addictive than amphetamines, though both are controlled substances, and both can be detected by a 5 panel test.

Phencyclidine

PCP, also known as Angel Dust, is a drug that originally was used in the 50's as a surgical anesthetic designed to sedate. When abused, phencyclidine users experience a dissociative feeling of detachment as well as feelings of euphoria, and hallucinations. Long term effects may lead to psychological dependence as well as difficulty with memory, speech, and thinking.

Does Hydrocodone show up on a 5 panel drug test?

No. A 5 panel only detects basic Opiates, which refers to Codeine, Morphine, and Heroin. Opiates are drugs that come from the opium plant and are designed to treat pain. Semi-synthetic and synthetic opiates like hydrocodone and oxycodone are even more powerful substances and highly addictive. There is an option to add expanded opiates on to our 5 panel test.

Does Adderall Show up on a 5 panel drug test?

Yes. Adderall is a prescription stimulant intended to treat ADHD and will get picked up by the 5 panel as an amphetamine. Users with a valid doctor's prescription can share that with our MRO prior to the release of results. Some people purchase this substance illegally to increase wakefulness and alertness, enhance sociability, and induce euphoria.

Does Xanax or Ativan show up on a 5 panel drug test?

No. Xanax (alprazolam) and Ativan (lorazepam) are both benzodiazepines, which is a class of drugs that are included on this test. A 9 panel drug test will detect benzodiazepines.

Does Suboxone or Tramadol show up on a 5 panel drug test?

Neither of these drugs can be detected by a basic 5 panel test. Tramadol (Lorazepam) is a strong painkiller intended to treat severe pain. A 14 panel drug test tests for Tramadol. Suboxone (Buprenorphine) is a treatment for opioid addiction, but is occasionally misused by people seeking out it's opiate like effects. A 16 panel drug test includes a Suboxone test.

5 Panel Drug Test Facts

Is Health Street's test the same as getting a 5 panel drug test at CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart?

No. At home drug tests that can be purchased in drug stores are not the same as the rapid drug tests or lab tests offered by Health Street. These drug store tests are a consumer version of a professional test. A standard 5 panel drug test that gets analyzed in one of our certified laboratories such as LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics is a professional test that employers use for pre employment drug testing or as part of a drug free workplace.

Does Oxycodone Show up on a 5 panel drug test?

No. Oxycodone is an expanded opiate that is not picked up on this test. Our 7 panel and 12 panel tests can detect oxycodone.

Can I use this test to comply with Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing?

No. See our DOT Drug Test to comply with DOT regulations for safety-sensitive employees.

Do you offer any screening method that goes back further than a urine drug screening, such as a hair follicle test or fingernails test?

Yes. We offer a hair test for the same drugs of abuse. The hair screening method goes back 90 days. The 5 Panel Hair Test is a drug screen test for basic opiates, amphetamines and methamphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, and PCP, and automatically includes MDMA. You have the option of including hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Does a 5 panel drug test test for alcohol?

Alcohol is an optional add-on. To include alcohol, you just choose a test panel option above that includes either a basic urine alcohol or an EtG alcohol.

How much does a 5 panel drug test cost?

The basic 5 panel test is $75. There are some optional drugs that can be included with this test that can increase the cost. The range is from $75-$189.
