Are Tia and Tamera Identical Twins?

Back in the day, doctors determined if twins were identical or fraternal based on looks alone! It might seem obvious Tia and Tamera are identical, but the twins wanted a DNA test to remove all doubt.

Recently, actresses Tia and Tamera Mowry of “Sister, Sister” and “Tia and Tamera” fame underwent DNA testing to see if they are really identical twins. They had assumed their whole lives they were, but they never got a Twin Zygosity DNA Test to prove it. On the surface, it might seem clear Tia and Tamera are identical, and there might be a question of why a DNA test was even needed. Sometimes twins look alike, but they are technically only fraternal twins. A famous example of this is Mary Kate and Ashley Olson who look just as much alike as Tia and Tamera, but who are actually fraternal twins. And years ago, doctors made the determination of identical vs. fraternal based on looks! Until recently, there were no scientific assessments.

In Tia and Tamera’s case, testing came back proving they do share 100% of the same DNA and are therefore identical twins. It is interesting to know that although Tia and Tamera do share the exact same DNA, they do not look exactly alike. For example, Tamera has a mole on her left cheek, just below her eye. This physical difference and other physical differences between identical twins can be attributed to things such as how the twins shared the womb and any trauma experienced during birth. Knowing Tia and Tamera decided to have a DNA test done to determine if they were actually considered identical may lead people to wondering about other secrets that DNA tests can unlock.

Map a Family Tree

Many people are interested in learning about their heritage. This can be especially interesting for someone who was adopted and knows little or nothing about his or her biological family. It can also be interesting for people just wanting to know their family heritage. A DNA test can break your DNA down to determine where your ancestors originated.

Paternity Testing

Paternity tests are used for a variety of purposes including proving parentage for child support reasons, proving parentage for custody purposes, and to prove right for inheritance. When choosing a DNA test, it is important to use a facility accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks. This is the best way to know your test results will handled correctly and will be accurate.

Establish Other Family Relationships

DNA tests can be used to prove other family relationships including: siblings, half-siblings, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. They can also be used to establish twin zygosity, or the degree of similarity between twins’ genes, like was done in the case of Tia and Tamara Mowry.
