It’s common knowledge that if you are planning on competing in a professional sporting event, then you are bound to be drug tested before the big event. So, you can imagine that while YouTube sensation Logan Paul’s boxing match against rapper KSI was well-anticipated, Paul’s dramatic bulk-up was not — especially when his new physique was revealed on Twitter with the not-so-subtle caption, “Hope I pass my drug test.” In what seemed like a blink of an eye, Logan Paul went from being the goofy guy-next-door to looking more like the jock we all knew from high school.

Fans were already angry because of Logan Paul history of obscene stunts.

After all, that is how the YouTuber rose to online stardom in the first place. Paul has seemed like such an accessible person and brand, what with his wild antics being shown on film for years as he tried to shock and surprise his audiences. It was only after he shocked viewers with a particularly graphic video in Japan’s infamous Aokigahara forest that Paul began to take stock of his actions, and what he was willing to do to generate interest and hype in his channel.

It was through launching the rebirth in his career that brought Logan Paul to boxing — and eventually, an exhibition match between Paul and his contemporary, British YouTuber KSI. Having had their match end in a draw, it seemed only natural that the two would cross paths again in the boxing ring — this time, in a more professional setting. However, fans wondered whether the pair would even make it to the ring, considering Paul’s jacked up figure and his impending drug test.

Recreational, not performance-enhancing, drugs could have halted Logan Paul’s boxing career.

Granted, the automatic assumption by most fans was that Logan Paul had chosen to use to steroids to enhance his performance, in preparation for his upcoming match. It would not have been the first time that a sportsperson with big dreams sought alternative methods to give them an edge. That is why urine tests have become almost culturally synonymous with drug testing in sports: it is one of the most fool-proof ways of detecting drug use and ensuring that everyone who does compete does so on a level playing field.

Now, while he does not have a reputation for using performance-enhancing drugs, Logan Paul has been known to relax with some casual cannabis use. According to Harvard Medical School, taking marijuana may assist with alleviating pain and stress. These are definitely two factors that would give Paul an edge with his training — particularly considering that spending hours sparring in preparation for a highly publicized match may create a need for both pain and stress relief. However, taking marijuana would also risk Paul’s eligibility to compete. Again, this is because doing so would jeopardize the fairness of his boxing match with KSI. Having a casual smoke may be much more trouble than it is worth for Logan Paul.

This is not just about how someone relaxes: it is also about how they act in a professional manner.

True cynics may argue that while the publicity from his upcoming bout would give Logan Paul plenty of attention and scope for sponsorships, there was also some to be had from creating a scandal around his drug test results. That being said, Logan Paul had evidently taken his responsibilities as a professional athlete seriously by qualifying for the match and clearly passing the requisite drug test. And despite his fit figure and training, Paul lost the match.

Following the bout, he released a video with this statement.

I lost … but you know what? For some reason … I just don’t feel like I lost. And, how could I? JJ (KSI) and I came together to literally shift culture. This event was unprecedented … we showed the world how strong the new age of digital media is … We gave the sport the respect it deserves … most important: I’m healthy. JJ is healthy … so yeah, dude! It’s a win! A big win.
-Logan Paul

It is clear that Logan Paul understood one of the tenets of undertaking competitive sport endeavors: that sportspeople are professionals, too. In the same way that different types of drug tests are used in the workplace to ensure that staff adhere to professional standards, the same can be said for those who pursue careers in sport. And, just like professionals in the office, sporting professionals have to carefully consider how they unwind.
