There’s been plenty of time to “Netflix and Chill” thanks to the wacky winter gifted to us by El Nino. Given the nature of what we do here at Health Street, it seems that we naturally gravitate towards drug related content when indulging in a little binge watching. We like to think of it as research that helps us better understand the nature of drug use, which also happens to double as a convenient justification for being in our pajamas in the middle of the day. Occupational hazards, right?

Anyhow, here are some of our favorite TV shows about drugs we’ve been watching…for research purposes, of course…

Breaking Bad

We’re ashamed to admit that we were a little behind the times when it comes to recognizing the genius that is Breaking Bad. Seriously. Who knew watching the life of cancer riddled chemistry teacher spiral out of control after turning into a methamphetamine manufacturing maniac could be so captivating? Five seasons Walter White and Jesse Pinkman narrowly escaping one version of peril or another weren’t nearly enough. The show artfully detailed the devastating impact meth has on its users and the communities they live in. Add to that the unique insight into the world of meth manufacturing that was provided and it’s clear to see why the show and its actors received such high praise.

Nurse Jackie

Tapping into the overwhelming addiction to prescription opiates that has rocked the nation over the past several years is Nurse Jackie. Its title character, Jackie, is an excellent nurse to each of her patients and is able to hit the hospital tile running each day after popping a couple pills. Jackie quickly loses her balance while navigating the slippery slope of addiction after hurting her back. The show followers her as she works every angle she can in order to score her next high whether it means using the hospital pharmacist to get her fix or taking it from her patients.

Weeds

The Showtime series Weeds burst onto the drug related TV show scene well before marijuana was legalized in Colorado and prior to any talk of decriminalizing it on the federal level. The show focused on the drug dealing ways of newly widowed mother of two, Nancy Botwin, while she works her way up the ranks as a marijuana mama. There’s little glamorization in this series as the very real dangers faced and created by dealing drugs, especially when you have to juggle soccer games and PTA meetings on the side.
