Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Sunnyvale, CA and Santa Clara County

Healthcare professionals and volunteers in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara County have come together to develop a program called SCCOOPP, which stands for Santa Clara County Opioid Overdose Prevention Project. Its mission is to promote opioid safety throughout the community.

They provide education to prescribers of opioids as well as to the public and improve opioid use disorder treatment access. They also hope to improve access to Naloxone kits. Naloxone, otherwise known by its brand name Narcan, is a drug used to reverse opioid-related breathing problems.

The program also has the goal of reducing the number of opioids in circulation by promoting proper storage of the medications and by proper disposal.

This coalition is just part of larger opioid safety coalitions in the state of California.

Experts Say…

Bruce Copley, Director of Drug and Alcohol Services in Santa Clara County, said, “Fentanyl is a very powerful opioid drug and can kill in a matter of minutes. The risk of death increases if a person takes these drugs alone. If you use opiates or know someone who might be using them, you can get the drug Narcan to stop an overdose. Friends and family can be trained on how to administer Narcan and can carry it with them to save a life in case of an emergency.”
