There were 137 hospitalizations of individuals who overdosed on opioids in 2021 in Alameda County
In 2021, there were 513,263 opioids prescriptions in Alameda County

Pleasanton, California: Drug abuse trends

In Alameda County, drug abuse trends have shown a concerning increase in opioid-related deaths. In 2020, the county recorded 170 fatalities due to opioid overdose, which was a 40 percent increase from the previous year. The number of overdose deaths continued to rise in 2021 with 33 more fatalities than in the previous year. A potent synthetic opioid called fentanyl is thought to be a primary contributor to overdoses in the area. Like many other counties, people without homes die from drug overdose, but the cause of death is not investigated. This gap may lead to underestimation of overdose-related deaths among people without homes. Alameda County is currently investigating overdose deaths in recent years to determine the number of homeless individuals among them to refine their data.

Although Narcan can reverse the effect of an overdose, many cases still result in death. Preventing drug abuse by detecting it early and intervening before it becomes a severe problem can help save lives of people in Alameda County. Health Street's drug tests can assist in identifying drug use before it leads to devastating consequences. Employers and individuals can use our tests to protect their workplace or personal life from the dangers of drug abuse.
