Why Health Street

A Decade Plus of Experience

Health Street has provided drug tests since 2010. The first time we performed drug testing in San Jose, CA was in 2015.  From then until now, we have completed 301 drug tests at our San Jose labs.

Dedicated to Excellence

We are dedicated to providing a level of excellence in drug testing in San Jose that is unmatched.

The Drug Subculture of San Jose

San Jose’s technology industry has a dark underbelly: drug use. Often under the radar, drug abuse claims not just the poor and needy, nut also well known business leaders such as Google executive Forrest Timothy Hayes, who died on his yacht due to an apparent Heroin overdose. After his untimely death, it is hoped that issues of addiction and drug abuse come out from the shadows and are dealt with more openly by the companies of Silicon Valley. However that hope might not be achieved any time soon, as the people of Silicon Valley take pride in their unwillingness to quit. Coffee and Redbull can only take a person so far before they switch to stronger methods, which usually means meth or cocaine. Luckily, Health Street has many drug test centers to choose from in San Jose if help is required.

San Jose’s “High Functioning” Drug Problem

San Jose and the rest of Silicon Valley are known for high levels of achievement created by intense, demanding work environments. These “pressure cooker” careers often lead to professionals working 70+ hours a week with little time off and no room for mistakes. Unfortunately, these circumstances create a breeding ground for “high functioning” drug addiction. Since this type of drug addiction may not be obvious in a work setting, workplace drug testing is recommended.

The use of performance-enhancing drugs including cocaine and methamphetamine are rampant among a wide array of professionals including CEOs, doctors, engineers, salespeople, and more. Other substances that high functioning addicts tend to abuse include Adderall (a performance enhancer), LSD (used in “micro-doses” to boost creativity), opioids (for relaxation and pain relief), and heroin (for euphoria, pain relief, and to alleviate the side effects of using meth). With routine drug testing, companies can ensure a drug-free workplace while addressing the health concerns of their workers

San Jose Drug Policy Changes

In an effort to keep first and second-time offenders out of the court systems, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced in 2019 that it would no longer file charges against most people caught with small amounts of illegal drugs if it’s the only thing they’re cited for.

This decision was based, partially, on 2018 statistics that showed the following:

trending_up
35,000 drug cases were brought up in the county that year
trending_up
15% of these were for misdemeanor drug possession
trending_up
90% of the misdemeanor charges (4,500) were against first and second-time offenders

According to officials, this change was instituted to allow local law enforcement to divert their attention towards more serious addiction cases. A court ordered drug test may be needed for proper assessment. Minor cases are now categorized as public-health issues while more serious drug problems continue to be addressed as public-safety issues. The hope is that this will help reduce the number of community nuisances and overall public-safety concerns.

Critics have expressed concerns that this new approach will result in even more drug-related crimes. The long-term impact remains to be seen.

San Jose: The Center of the Tech Universe

San Jose, California is known around the world as the epicenter of Silicon Valley. It has one of the most sophisticated and advanced technology sectors in the globe. Six out of the ten global leaders in tech have operations in and around San Jose. Research and Development for many companies is headquartered in this area. The Silicon Valley Manufacturing Roundtable Initiative is a collaborative that brings together members of the industry. A downside to the massive success of this region is the higher cost of starting up a business. Fewer and few businesses can afford to initiate operations in San Jose without the financial backing of venture capital.

Wealth in San Jose

San Jose is one of the most expensive places to live in the entire country. It’s average home value is an astounding $1,080,017, where the national average is $227,025. With such a major difference between the two, it makes sense that other expenses in San Jose will be just as proportionally expensive. Even renting a home is extremely overpriced, at almost 2,000 dollars, which is also more than double the national average. These expenses are definitely more manageable though, as the average salary in San Jose is almost 80,000 dollars. With all this big money circling around, it’s no wonder that the unemployment rate is a mere 2.6%.
