Community Efforts to Curb Substance Abuse in Santa Clara, CA
The growing impact of the opioid epidemic experienced across Santa Clara, CA and the rest of the state isn’t only affecting adults. A growing number of adolescents are becoming involved with harmful substances, sometimes resulting in deadly consequences. To combat this concern, Santa Clara County developed the Children, Family, and Community Services (CFCS) program.
This program offers confidential substance abuse resources to youth and young adults ages 12 to 21. A team of specialized therapists work with youth and their families who are struggling with substance use and mental health issues by offering individual counseling, group counseling, and case management services. Through these partnerships, struggling youth are provided medical care resources, transportation, job training, and housing resources to help set them in the right direction.
Laws and Regulations Targeting Substance Abuse in Santa Clara, CA
Like many states across the country, California passed new regulations in 2018 to take action against the growing opioid epidemic. To support new opioid prescribing regulations, the state implemented the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES). This system is used to more accurately check the flow of controlled substances across the state and reduce potentially harmful “doctor shopping” from substance abusers.
Likewise, under new regulations, if a doctor prescribes an opioid prescription to a patient who has an increased risk of overdose (or the prescription is also accompanied by a benzodiazepine), the doctor must offer a prescription for Naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal drug. To aid in this new regulation, prescribers will also be required to provide education on overdose prevention and instructions on how to administer Naloxone.
