Oakland, California – Drug Testing
Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Oakland, CA
In May of 2022, Alameda County Sheriff’s Office detectives busted drug dealers who were allegedly operating out of an Oakland high school parking lot. Four people were arrested and the police seized 15 pounds of fentanyl. In addition, they also seized one kilogram of heroin and $139,000 in cash.
While detectives do not believe the dealers were selling to school children, they allege that they were using the hecticness of student drop-offs to blend in. They believe the drug transport was part of an organized network and that they arrived in Oakland before being sent on to San Francisco.
Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Oakland
Statistics show that opioid overdoses claimed the lives of 170 people in Alameda County between the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and October of 2021. There was also a 40% increase in fatalities between 2019 and 2020, with most of them being linked to fentanyl.
However, while police continue to track these statistics, the numbers do not include many instances where the life-saving drug Narcan is distributed and 911 is never called. Those with experience in the area know first-hand how prevalent this is among the homeless community and other habitual drug users. So, while Oakland accounts for more overdose-related 911 calls than any other city in the county, the problem is likely far larger than most people realize.
Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Oakland
A Public Health Institute in Oakland called CA Bridge aims to change the way addiction is treated by providing training, technical assistance, and coaching to hospitals in hopes of helping them step up their role in solving the area’s overdose crisis. The organization advocates for evidence-based medications for addiction treatment (MAT), primarily buprenorphine. It also focused on reducing barriers to treatment and increasing access to harm-reduction initiatives. The ultimate goal of CA Bridge is to ensure patients can get the treatment they need at any area hospital, whenever they need it.
