The overdose death rate remained steady in San Mateo County from 2004 to 2018 and increased from 2018 to 2020.
San Mateo and San Mateo County saw a dramatic increase in drug overdoses and deaths from June 17 to June 20, 2022, ranging from age 23 to 44. Seventy percent of these overdoses and overdose deaths were male, and 30 percent were female.

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in San Mateo, CA

In October 2022, San Mateo police seized $143,000 after a traffic stop led to a drug bust in San Mateo. Officers noticed THC cartridges in the vehicle and cited the 20-year-old in the vehicle. He admitted to selling the cartridges for the last couple of years, and officers searched his room where they found the cash and other cartridges. They discovered that he possessed 834 cartridges in total.

In October 2022, two people were arrested in San Mateo, CA for drug and child endangerment charges after a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation. Inside the vehicle were four adults and a five-year-old child. Offers conducted a record check and found that the front passenger and driver were both on bail. They performed a search, and in a purse on the front console found a loaded unregistered Glock 23 and high-capacity magazine. They also found a large amount of marijuana and cash. In the trunk, they found methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, a digital scale, and more cash. The two individuals faced multiple charges, including weapon, drug, child abuse, and conspiracy charges.
