Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in San Francisco, California
Many Substance Health Services in San Francisco have based their philosophies on harm reduction, which means they do not necessarily require people who use substances to abstain or stop. Instead, they try to reduce health and social harms associated with the addiction. Individuals who struggle with drug abuse problems can try some of these programs.
There are other options for treatments as well. Just recently, San Francisco increased its overnight residential treatment and care services. They are also trying to improve the residential capacity by about 400 overnight treatment spaces, which will add up to the 2,200 existing spaces.
Expert says…
“The chance of dying by overdose among San Francisco opioid users is about 3.4 percent annually. Put in perspective, this fatality rate is more than 10 times higher than that of a soldier being killed by hostile forces during the United States’ second invasion of Iraq. San Francisco’s drug tolerance policies are based on the idea of ‘harm reduction,’ which is the view that those using illegal drugs should be protected, not shamed nor prosecuted for their drug use, and that their lifestyle should be accepted as a normal part of life for those choosing to use. San Francisco prosecutes very little, provides free drug paraphernalia, including hypodermic needles, rubber tourniquets to pop veins, metal cookers for heroin, and sheets of foil and straws for fentanyl and crack pipes,” says Lee Ohanian, who specializes in economics at Hoover Institution.

I liked pre-registering online but unfortunately it had zero benefit when I arrived at the testing location. They were unable to pull my registration, unable to scan the bar I received and Harbor to do everything manually. On top of that I had to wait half hour before getting tested. It seemed messy at the actual office. Happy with fast turnaround of results though.
