The city of Kansas City, MO offers resources to fight the city's opioid problem. These resources are for families and caregivers of those struggling with opioid abuse, medical professionals, first responders, and teens, to put them on the path to opioid abuse recovery. Kansas City also participates in National Take Back Day, allowing residents to safely dispose of unwanted and unused medications.

In addition, addiction treatment groups and physicians recommend that Kansas City residents obtain naloxone, also known by its brand name Narcan, if they have friends or family members that use opioids. Naloxone is a drug used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses and is available at pharmacies to all Kansas City residents.

Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Kansas City, MO

Over the past 10 years, drug overdoses in the state of Missouri have become an epidemic. For adults aged 18-44 in the state, it is the leading cause of death.

In 2019 in Missouri, there were 715 deaths due to synthetic opioids, including fentanyl. In 2020, this number jumped to 1,095.

Jackson County, where Kansas City is located, had 210 opioid deaths between 2018 and 2020.

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Kansas City, MO

In June of 2022, 16 Kansas City metro area residents were arrested for drug trafficking conspiracy. These individuals were indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in the conspiracy to distribute cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. Thirteen of them conspired to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl from January 1, 2019, through June 21, 2022. Six of the Kansas City metro area residents were charged with their involvement in a money laundering conspiracy after engaging in financial transactions involving the proceeds of the drug trafficking conspiracy. Many of these residents were also charged with seven separate drug trafficking counts and nine separate counts for using their cell phones to facilitate drug trafficking crimes. One resident was charged with the possession of a firearm after being in possession of a Springfield .40-caliber handgun in August of 2021.
