Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Independence, MO

In April 2022, 29-year-old man, from Independence, MO was sentenced in federal court after leading officers in three high-speed vehicle pursuits. He was charged with carjacking, illegally possessing firearms, and distributing methamphetamine. He admitted that from June 2019 to August 2020, he conspired to distribute methamphetamine and distributed over 15 kilograms. At the time of his arrest, he had 3.6 grams of meth in his front pocket and a box containing items related to drug distribution.

In June 2022, two Independence, MO residents were among 16 people indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiring to distribute methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl. Many of the defendants faced separate charges, including drug trafficking charges, using their cell phones to facilitate a drug-trafficking crime and firearm possessions.

The Jackson County Health Department offers resources to Independence and county residents who struggle with opioid addiction.
