Shawnee, Kansas: Drug abuse trends

Kansas is facing a new challenge in its fight against opioid overdoses as fentanyl continues to drive overdose deaths. Another drug called xylazine is increasingly surfacing in Kansas, making it even more difficult to reduce the number of overdose deaths. Xylazine is a potent sedative primarily used by veterinarians, and is being mixed with fentanyl to intensify the drug's effects. While xylazine's presence in Kansas is not as significant as in other regions, public health officials, activists, and law enforcement are concerned about its impact.

Xylazine presents unique risks. Since it is not an opioid, naloxone is ineffective at reversing its deadly effects. The drug's use can worsen opioid withdrawals and impede medication-assisted treatment for substance abuse. Xylazine-related wounds are also challenging to treat due to reduced oxygen flow to the skin. Efforts are underway to address the issue, including potentially scheduling xylazine as a controlled substance. However, a comprehensive investigation is needed to understand the source and distribution of the drug.

Authorities seized 20k fentanyl pills in Johnson County

In April 2023, Johnson County authorities took twenty thousand fentanyl pills off the streets after a successful drug bust. The deputy and his K9 seized two bags of blue pills laced with fentanyl. Authorities warned that these pills were meant to be distributed in the Kansas City Area. They also try to warn people about the potency of fentanyl and that even a tiny dose can be fatal.
