Back in July 2012, federal authorities filed an indictment on 35 individuals for their role in a large-scale marijuana and cocaine drug ring operating in the Johnson and Douglas County areas. According to reports, the drug trafficking organization was responsible for distributing over $16.9 million worth of high-grade marijuana and cocaine throughout the surrounding counties.

The indictment included allegations that defendants laundered profits from the operation through local businesses, personal property, and commercial real estate in Olathe, KS as well as Kansas City, Lawrence, and surrounding areas. Additional charges also included the distribution of drugs within the 1,000-ft protected areas surrounding local schools, playgrounds, and universities.

Laws Surrounding Substance Abuse in Olathe, KS

As with many states across the country, Olathe and the state of Kansas have witnessed an increased rate of substance abuse and drug-related deaths. To better combat this concern, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback passed House Bill 2217 in 2017 to expand access to the opioid overdose reversal drug Naloxone.

Under the newly established Kansas protocol, pharmacists must review current laws and dispensing guidelines prior to registering as a Naloxone distributor. Once a pharmacist is approved, they may distribute Naloxone to Olathe residents who are at risk of a drug overdose without the requirement of a prescription. Furthermore, the pharmacist must also provide instructions to the patient or family regarding the administration of the nasal spray or injectable form of Naloxone.
