Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Olathe

Following a recent spike in opioid-related deaths, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners voted to participate in multi-national settlements with the opioid industry for its role in contributing to the opioid epidemic. In 2019, there were 34 opioid-related deaths in Johnson County. By 2021, this number had increased to 86. According to Johnston County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Diane Peterson, many of these deaths are attributed to the use of fentanyl or oxycodone combined with other drugs, such as Xanax or alprazolam.

In July of 2022, the country received its first distribution, in the amount of $113,560. The funds are to be used for activities and projects aimed at reducing, mitigating, or treating the effects of substance abuse addiction. The settlement payments are expected to continue over the next 18 years and could total over $3 million.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Olathe, KS

The Municipal Prosecutor for the City of Olathe has established a pretrial diversion program for drug-related crimes. This program is intended to offer a "second chance" to first offenders charged with drug offenses. If the program is completed successfully, participants can have their charges dismissed. This program is considered a privilege, not a right, and acceptance into the program is not guaranteed.

To qualify, individuals must attend a mandatory court date, schedule an evaluation with a licensed alcohol and drug education and treatment provider, submit a completed diversion application, and pay a diversion fee. Additional requirements include abstinence from alcohol and drug use or possession, successful completion of a treatment program, counseling, restitution payments to the victim or community, and the maintenance of gainful employment.
