This included a two-year, $927,513 grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The funds will be used to hire 4.5 full-time equivalent employees to assist incarcerated individuals dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues as they prepare to re-enter the community.
This initiative will offer clinical support as well as direct aid such as clothing, food, transportation, and financial assistance. It is expected to lower rates of recidivism and help keep drugs off the streets of Overland Park and the surrounding area. While the grant pays for a two-year program, the effects are expected to last well into the future.
