Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Overland Park

In 2021, the Johnson County Commission voted to accept over $1.9 million in federal, state, and local grants to provide mental health and substance abuse services throughout the county. This included a two-year, $927,513 grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The funds will be used to hire 4.5 full-time equivalent employees to assist incarcerated individuals dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues as they prepare to re-enter the community.

This initiative will offer clinical support as well as direct aid such as clothing, food, transportation, and financial assistance. It is expected to lower rates of recidivism and help keep drugs off the streets of Overland Park and the surrounding area. While the grant pays for a two-year program, the effects are expected to last well into the future.

Dr. Peterson says that the bulk of these deaths were linked to the use of fentanyl, a non-pharmaceutical-created opioid.

Of those, approximately 44% were linked to fentanyl or fentanyl analogs, 44% involved methamphetamines, and the remaining 12% were linked to the use of other drugs such as prescription opioids, cocaine, and benzodiazepines.
