Survey of Dallas Employees Drug Use
Health Street recently surveyed respondents in the Dallas metro area on drug use habits, especially as they relate to the workplace. The results may certainly leave employers uneasy.
40.1% of respondents in Dallas claimed to have used marijuana in the past year -- nearly twice the national average. For most, marijuana use was far from sporadic, with 23.5% of respondents admitting to consuming marijuana products within the past month.

The opioid epidemic has also touched Dallas — with 18.6% of respondents claiming to have used opiates like fentanyl, oxycodone, or heroin without a prescription.

Though THC and opiate-based narcotics were the most popular among Dallas residents, cocaine use seemed especially prevalent in the workplace. While only 7.6% of respondents said they’ve used cocaine within the past year, an alarming 5.1% of all respondents admitting to having been under the influence of cocaine at work within the past twelve months -- meaning those that use cocaine likely use it habitually and do not limit its use to recreational situations.
Drug Use in the Dallas Workplace
Though the results above might suggest respondents are largely unemployed, that is far from the case. 65.6% of all Dallas survey respondents claimed to have full time employment, with 56.5% of that number saying they have undergone drug testing at work.
So, why are Dallas employers; testing initiatives falling short? Our analysis identified several potential reasons why an overwhelming 22.6% of employed Dallas residents concede to having been high at work within the last year — with 6.1% claiming to be high more than once a week.
64.9% of Dallas employees say that their employers do not implement a random drug test as part of their employee drug testing procedures. In turn, employees know far in advance of a drug test and can limit their drug use accordingly, only to continue the habits afterward.
10.4% of respondents in Dallas consume drugs that their employers don’t test for. Among these drugs are Opiates (Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Heroin, etc.), cocaine, and ecstasy. Higher panel drug tests (such as the 10 Panel, 12 Panel, or 16 Panel) can cover all of these drugs, while the regular 5 Panel test, which is administered by most employers in the region, only covers a few of the most popular narcotics.

The Negative Impact of Workplace Drug Use in Dallas
Drug use in the workplace can drain a significant amount of resources for employers.
Despite knowing the degree to which drug use can impact their job performance, an astonishing 22.6% of employed respondents in Dallas admitted to using drugs while on the job.
Additionally, 40.9% of employed respondents said they know of coworkers coming to their workplace while under the influence of drugs -- and that drug use has serious consequences. 21.1% of employed respondents know of a coworker who has stolen from the workplace to either finance drug purchases or because their judgment was impaired by the drug use.

Methamphetamine Usage in DallasMethamphetamines is the most confiscated drug in the state of Texas, based on data collected in 2015. 32.4% of all drug seizures in Texas have been crystal meth, ranking higher than other drugs such as marijuana and cocaine. The use of meth is still very much growing, and although alcohol remains the most treated drug, meth use is illegal and must be taken more seriously. Based on overdose statistics between 2014-2016, the fatality rate was 949 per 100,000 people in Dallas. In the first half of 2017, more than three times the amount of local workers tested positive for meth use as they did in the first half of 2009. There is much substance abuse treatment work to be done in Dallas.
The Technology Sector of Dallas TXDallas boasts over 3,000 technology companies and about 230,000 employees based here at highly ranked positions. As the second largest technology business center in the country, it is just below Silicon Valley and it is still growing. Several key players in the technological sector have moved their headquarters to the Dallas area, such as AT&T and Fujitsu Network Communications.
