Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Grand Prairie, TX

In March of 2019, the Grand Prairie Police Department was informed that large amounts of THC were being sold out of a Dallas home with connections to Grand Prairie. An investigation by the Grand Prairie Police, their K9 Max, and the Dallas Police Gang unit led to a narcotics and weapons bust where two people were arrested. Officers recovered a stolen handgun and an assault rifle. The two individuals arrested were charged with manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance.

In 2018, a house across the street from a Grand Prairie elementary school was raided in a large FBI drug bust in North Texas. The investigation led to the arrest of 13 people linked to Mexican cartels. These individuals were charged with federal drug conspiracy charges after they conspired to distribute methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine since 2014. Officers seized 380 grams of heroin, a shotgun, 5 kilograms of methamphetamine, and $25,000.

Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Grand Prairie, TX

In December 2020, four people died from opioid overdoses in Grand Prairie, TX.
Grand Prairie had 33 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2020. Of these deaths, all but two were linked to non-pharmaceutical opioids, including fentanyl and heroin.
In 2020, Grand Prairie had an opioid overdose fatality rate of 43.8 per 100,000 people, which was the third highest out of the province’s urban municipalities.
There were 26 opioid-related overdose deaths in Grand Prairie in 2018 and 2019 combined.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Grand Prairie, TX

Grand Prairie offers a Medication Disposal Program that allows residents to safely dispose of prescription drugs, including narcotics, pet medication, over-the-counter medications, inhalers, sample medications, ointments, lotions, vitamins, and EpiPens. Residents can bring unused, unwanted, or expired medications to the Grand Prairie Police Department for safe disposal. The program does not accept needles, syringes, empty containers, aerosolized cans, mercury products, radioactives, hydrogen, peroxide, or other chemicals.
