Irving, TX: Drug abuse trends

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected people's lives in many ways. As indicated by recent data, the pandemic may have even caused the number of drug overdoses to increase. Some experts believe that social distancing made people feel more stressed, lonely, and anxious, often leading to drug relapse or drug abuse.

In Texas, 589 patients with obesity were surveyed from June to September during the lockdown. The numbers show that almost a quarter of the patients diagnosed with obesity used opioids during this period. Many patients with obesity also suffered from mental health conditions. Some patients struggled with depression, anxiety, or trouble sleeping, which made them about four times more likely to abuse drugs. The people who reported stress eating were six times more likely to abuse substances than before.
