In the United States, 40 percent of all opioid-related deaths involved prescription opioids. To curb the opioid epidemic in Colorado Springs and El Paso County, El Paso County Public Health offers education and information to healthcare workers about the prescribing guidelines for opioids.

In addition to these efforts, Colorado Springs residents can obtain naloxone, also known as Narcan, a life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses. Colorado's chief medical officer issued a standing order for naloxone so residents can obtain the drug without a prescription.

Experts Say…

Mary Steiner, community program manager for Colorado Health Partnerships, spoke about the opioid misuse in Colorado Springs and El Paso County. Her lecture was to help El Paso County residents understand the scope of misusing opioids and the consequences. "People tend to think the opioid crisis is restricted to the homeless, but it's not, and (it) is branching out," she said, "The opioid crisis started with pharmaceutical companies and over-prescribing medications. Opioids are highly addictive, and a lot of people are dying unnecessarily."
