Denver, CO: Drug abuse trends

According to data from the last decades, Denver is one of the worst cities for drug abuse in the United States. Substance abuse has been an increasing community concern; in 2019, tens of thousands of people were not receiving the treatment they needed.

Young males with lower income were especially likely to need the care. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented many people from visiting centers dedicated to helping them treat substance abuse. Fortunately, the rapid change with the progression of telemedicine started to provide new avenues of service during this time.

Additionally, the Denver Department of Public Health (DDPHE) issued two alerts to warn the community about fentanyl risks. One alert was in 2019 when fentanyl was discovered disguised as black tar heroin, and the second alert in 2020 occurred when there were fake oxycodone tablets containing fentanyl.

Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in Denver, Colorado

The Colorado Health Institute is trying to curb drug abuse in Denver, Colorado. They created a Strategic Plan for Primary Prevention of Substance Abuse: 2019-2024, in which they focused mainly on reducing substance abuse risks among youth and their families and strengthening protective factors to predict drug abuse.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment works to remediate the overdose problem. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Bureau of Justice Assistance provide them with funding to monitor drug overdose issues, work towards overdose prevention, and increase healthcare professionals’ access to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).

Denver has multiple drug abuse prevention programs and a Center for Addiction Medicine for those seeking help.
