Pueblo, CO: Drug abuse trends
Like many other states in the USA, Colorado was deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the state experienced a significant increase in drug overdose deaths. In 2020, more than 1,400 Coloradans died due to fatal overdoses, a 38 percent increase from 2019. Based on the data, experts believe that the restrictions caused many people to either start using drugs or use more drugs than before, leading to increased drug overdose deaths. People were also often alone when they used drugs during the pandemic, leaving no one to help when overdoses occurred.
The availability of heroin and fentanyl also contributed to the growth of drug overdoses in Pueblo during this time. In 2020, Colorado experienced a 54 percent increase in the involvement of these drugs, and 68 percent of all fatal overdoses involved fentanyl. From 2019 to 2020, the number of deadly overdoses that involved fentanyl more than doubled.
Fentanyl isn’t the only drug contributing to fatal drug overdoses, however. From 2019 to 2020, Colorado drug overdose deaths also increased for the following substances:
Methamphetamine-related deaths increased from 349 people to 525 people
Cocaine-related deaths increased from 135 people to 219 people
Opioid-related deaths (including fentanyl) increased by 54%
Although drug overdose deaths have been increasing in Colorado yearly, 2019 to 2020 saw the steepest increase in over twenty years.
