Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Aurora, CO

In July 2022, Colorado Law Enforcement and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) announced an indictment against eight individuals for their role in a massive fentanyl trafficking operation. According to reports, a multi-month wiretap investigation first began in December 2021 after a tip was sent to the Wyoming DEA office regarding a single drug transaction.

The investigation went on to discover the drugs were being trafficked from Mexico up into the Colorado metro area. During the investigation, law enforcement officers seized roughly 170,000 fentanyl pills outside of an Aurora apartment complex, marking the largest fentanyl pill seizure in Colorado’s history. The eight individuals were indicted for their smuggling and distribution roles in the large-scale fentanyl trafficking operation, including a local woman who would send drug proceeds back to Mexico through a money remittance business.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Aurora, CO

To help better address the surging risk of opioid overdose and abuse concerns across the Aurora and Colorado area, state officials implemented new prescribing laws for health professionals in 2018. Under Senate Bill 18-22, a prescriber must limit a patient’s initial opioid prescription to a max seven-day supply. This ruling does not apply to specific patient types, including hospice, cancer, and post-surgical patients.

After this initial prescription, a prescriber must then check with the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) database before prescribing any additional opioid medication. Doing so allows the prescribing health professionals to identify potential abuse concerns. Failure to complete this step constitutes unprofessional conduct on behalf of the professional and can be a cause for legal repercussions.
