Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Aurora, CO

In July 2022, Colorado Law Enforcement and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) announced an indictment against eight individuals for their role in a massive fentanyl trafficking operation. According to reports, a multi-month wiretap investigation first began in December 2021 after a tip was sent to the Wyoming DEA office regarding a single drug transaction.

The investigation went on to discover the drugs were being trafficked from Mexico up into the Colorado metro area. During the investigation, law enforcement officers seized roughly 170,000 fentanyl pills outside of an Aurora apartment complex, marking the largest fentanyl pill seizure in Colorado's history. The eight individuals were indicted for their smuggling and distribution roles in the large-scale fentanyl trafficking operation, including a local woman who would send drug proceeds back to Mexico through a money remittance business.
