San Marcos, California: Drug abuse trends

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego County has struggled with drug overdose fatalities. During the summer of 2020, the number of deadly overdoses increased by more than 50 percent compared to February or March in the same year.

Doctor Luke Bergmann, the director of Behavioral Health Services for the County Health and Human Services Agency, warned residents of San Diego County about the dangers of using drugs from the streets. “Given the presence of fentanyl in local drug supplies, San Diegans should avoid drugs purchased from the streets,” stated Dr. Bergmann. “But if you’re using illicit drugs or pharmaceutical medications that weren’t prescribed to you by a doctor, make sure there is someone with naloxone nearby to administer it in case you overdose.”

In 2019, there were 152 fentanyl-related deaths in San Diego County. In 2020, by the first week of August, there were already 233 fentanyl-involved fatal overdoses.

Police seized 5,000 pounds of methamphetamine in San Diego County

In what has been described as one of the biggest methamphetamine busts in the county, San Diego County Police seized more than 5,000 pounds of methamphetamine after tracking and intercepting a truck that crossed the United States border from Mexico. Police arrested four men and charged them with conspiracy to distribute drugs. They consider it a major win against drug cartels that fuel substance abuse in the USA.
