Fentanyl has been a major concern, contributing to a significant number of overdose deaths across all age groups in San Diego County, where San Diego is situated. This synthetic opioid is highly potent and has been found mixed with other drugs, increasing the risk of overdose.

In 2022, San Diego County reported over one million opioid prescriptions.

San Diego County had at least 726 deaths from opioid overdoses in 2022, in addition to 1,544 emergency department visits from opioids.

The highest number of fentanyl-related deaths among young adults, specifically those aged 25 to 34, was recorded in the 92103 zip code, covering San Diego's Uptown Communities such as Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, North Park, Mission Hills, and University Heights.

San Diego County has faced significant challenges related to drug overdose, mainly with the rise of fentanyl-related deaths. Since 2019, more than 1,770 individuals have died because of fentanyl in the region.

Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in San Diego, California

In response to the fentanyl crisis, San Diego County has taken proactive steps to monitor and prevent opioid overdoses in San Diego County. The county has implemented various programs and resources, including the distribution of naloxone, a medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose, and the availability of fentanyl test strips to check for the presence of the drug in substances.

Local Drug Busts in San Diego, California

San Diego's strategic location has made it a focal point for drug trafficking activities, including the distribution of fentanyl. Law enforcement agencies in the county have been actively engaged in combating the spread of illegal drugs, leading to many arrests and drug busts.

One drug bust occurred on February 9th, 2024, in San Diego County and involved Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego's Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team (FAST), the California Department of Justice San Diego Fentanyl Enforcement Program, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, and the U.S. Border Patrol. A suspect was arrested, and officials seized 720,000 fentanyl pills from the vehicle.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that this was the largest fentanyl seizure since the announcement of a partnership between the Department of Justice's Fentanyl Enforcement Program and the FAST Task Force. A total of 110 packages, weighing 72.05 kilograms (158.8 pounds) and containing blue pills marked with "M30" believed to contain fentanyl, were discovered.
