Border Patrol agents from the Murrieta office of Customs and Border Patrol stopped a 20-year-old U.S. citizen on Interstate 15 near Route 76 in March 2021, discovering over two-and-a-half pounds of fentanyl in his 2018 Audi Sedan. Similarly to the 2020 cocaine freeway bust, a canine team helped to uncover the illegal substance. Border Patrol estimated that the fentanyl had a street value of over $37,000. Because fentanyl is so powerful, it could have potentially killed over half a million people, Border Patrol reported.
