Doctor Luke Bergmann, the director of Behavioral Health Services for the County Health and Human Services Agency, warned residents of San Diego County about the dangers of using drugs from the streets. "Given the presence of fentanyl in local drug supplies, San Diegans should avoid drugs purchased from the streets," stated Dr. Bergmann. "But if you're using illicit drugs or pharmaceutical medications that weren't prescribed to you by a doctor, make sure there is someone with naloxone nearby to administer it in case you overdose."
In 2019, there were 152 fentanyl-related deaths in San Diego County. In 2020, by the first week of August, there were already 233 fentanyl-involved fatal overdoses.
