Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Lawrence, KS
Back in 2019, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department developed the Engage Douglas County initiative in response to the Kansas Community Health Plan. The foundation of this plan was built on a multitude of data points that highlighted the concern of substance abuse across the city of Lawrence as well as the surrounding Douglas County.
The Engage Douglas County initiative works to increase awareness of substance abuse, provide better ongoing support for those in need of treatment, and connect partners across the county to enhance prevention efforts and resources for residents. Together, this Douglas County initiative hopes to reduce overall substance abuse and combat the spiking number of deadly drug overdoses seen annually.
News Relating to Substance Abuse in Lawrence, KS
In November 2022, the state of Kansas announced it will receive more than $200 million from lawsuits related to the responsibility of prescription opioid makers, pharmacies, and distributors in the ongoing nationwide opioid epidemic. The state anticipates it will receive funds over the next 18 years to support ongoing addiction prevention and treatment initiatives across Douglas County and the surrounding state.
This settlement comes at a time when the state of Kansas is experiencing a spike in the amount of opioid-related drug overdoses involving illicit fentanyl mixed into counterfeit prescription pills and illegal drugs. With ongoing data, state officials will continue to study trends and needs across the state to understand which resources are needed most and in what specific areas.
