Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Mansfield, TX

Back in 2020, Tarrant County was awarded a $1,200,000 grant to develop the Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Abuse Program (COSSAP). The program was created as part of the federal Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act legislation to help communities across the country expand efforts to identify, respond, and support those impacted by illicit drugs.

In a county of over 2,080,000 residents, the Tarrant County program aims at improving the overall public safety of the community, supporting the welfare of children who have been impacted by illicit drug use, and promoting family stability via Tarrant County Family Recovery Court (FRC) services. The program funds will be used to enhance access to FRC services and improve the psychological well-being of those who participate.

Notable News Relating to Substance Abuse Concerns in Mansfield, TX

Texas and several other states have joined a lawsuit alleging opioid manufacturer Allergen and pharmaceutical giants CVS and Walgreens played a huge role in fueling the national opioid epidemic. In January 2023, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that the state secured an additional $1 billion to the already secured $2 billion as part of the nationwide opioid manufacturer and distributor lawsuit.

In response to the additional settlement funds, Ken Paxton stated that the money will, "provide funds to stop the irresponsible distribution of opioids" across the state of Texas, further aiding in the reduction of deadly overdoses. As time goes on, the funds will be divided amongst local governments to be used toward prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction services for residents.
