Lansing, KS – Drug Testing

Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Lansing, KS

In March 2023, the Lansing District Auditorium held a presentation to educate the Lansing community about the dangers of fentanyl. The presentation, called “One Pill Can Kill,” aimed to educate and provide strategies to prevent fentanyl overdoses. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid much more powerful than morphine, is becoming an increasing concern for health officials and police officers in Lansing. Several experts spoke at the One Pill Can Kill presentation, including a DEA Task Force officer, firefighter/paramedic, KCK Police Captain, and family members who lost loved ones from overdosing on fentanyl. The presenters stressed how fentanyl becomes easily addictive and that even a small amount can become fatal. Drug dealers often mix fentanyl with other drugs, increasing the overdose risk. Students, parents, staff, and community members attended the presentation.

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Lansing, KS

In April 2022, an inmate at a Lansing correctional facility overdosed and died from fentanyl. The inmate was serving time for the possession of a firearm and marijuana distribution. It was unknown how the inmate obtained the illegal drug, and his roommates said they had no idea he was using any substances. According to another inmate, the day of his overdose seemed like another routine day. But then multiple inmates noticed he was sleeping for several hours and became concerned when they didn’t hear him snore. When they checked on him, he felt cold, and another roommate noticed an open tea bag by his bunk. Investigators discovered K2 residue, and toxicology reports confirmed the presence of fentanyl. “We have been seeing far too many overdoses and deaths due to fentanyl in this community and nationally,” said Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson. “This drug is very lethal, even in small doses. It’s a scary threat to our public, and now it’s made its way into our prisons.”
