Efforts to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Frisco, TX

With the concern of deadly drug abuse spreading throughout Frisco and the surrounding Collin County area, county officials created the Collin County Substance Abuse Program to provide residents with wider access to preventive resources. This program was established back in 1990 and has been serving Collin County residents in several ways since.

Through the Collin County Substance Abuse Program, local residents can receive low-cost substance abuse evaluations and referrals to treatment services. Furthermore, the program has developed substance abuse education classes for local adolescents to be used throughout the Collin County Juvenile Probation Department. Overall, the program and its community organizations, schools, and state agency partners have served roughly 2,500 local residents for more than 25 years.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Frisco, TX

With poor prescribing practices playing a huge role in the nationwide opioid epidemic, the state of Texas enacted new laws that went into action back in 2020 to address this specific concern. Under House Bill 3284, physicians practicing in Texas must now check the state's prescription monitoring system, PMP Aware, for substance use history concerns prior to issuing prescriptions.

Furthermore, House Bill 2174 now mandates that opioid prescriptions issued for the purpose of acute pain treatment may not exceed 10 days and will not include any refills. In inpatient situations, such as cancer care and end-of-life care, this new regulation will not apply. As of January 1, 2021, HB2174 also requires physicians to electronically prescribe all controlled substances to better track the flow of opioids across the state of Texas.
