Fentanyl is a significant problem in San Diego County, which Escondido belongs to. Fentanyl overdose numbers tripled in 2019, and there was also a rise in drug use and overdoses before the COVID-10 outbreak. The pandemic itself triggered an even greater surge in drug overdoses in the area.
Very small doses of fentanyl can result in severe consequences. Naloxone is often used to reverse fentanyl overdoses in an attempt to save the lives of people who take too much, but not everyone has access to Naloxone, and it doesn't always work. Methadone and buprenorphine are some of the most effective medication treatments for opioid use disorder and can reduce the risk of overdoses to begin with.
Escondido Police seized drugs and handguns
In 2021, Escondido Police Department got a tip about someone selling drugs with a firearm. Police obtained a search warrant for his tent, and they seized handguns, ammunition, and drugs, such as hydrocodone pills, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and ecstasy pills.
However, the man was not alone in the tent. The Escondido Police arrested two men. One was a 37-year-old resident of Escondido. They charged him with possession of narcotics for sale and a controlled substance while armed, felon possession of a firearm, and also possession of a controlled substance for sale. The other one was a 34-year-old resident of Escondido, who was arrested because of possession of a gun. Both of them were booked into Vista Detention Facility.
