Carrollton, Texas: Drug abuse trends

Carrollton, Dallas County, Texas, has been struggling with the rise of fatal overdoses. In 2020 alone, there were 1,519 deadly overdoses that involved psychostimulants like Ritalin or methamphetamine. Over the years, methamphetamine has been the most significant issue in the state. Its numbers are 40 percent higher than the figures from 2019.

Additionally, Texas drug overdoses increased by 30 percent in 2020. Altogether, more than 4,000 people did not survive drug overdoses during the pandemic in 2020. Many of these deaths were caused by fentanyl, which is often mixed into other drugs and taken by unsuspecting victims. Fentanyl is highly potent, and very small doses of the drug can be fatal. The number of deadly overdoses involving synthetic opioids rose from 375 in 2019 to 1,011 in 2020. This is a 169 percent increase in just one year.

Local initiatives curbing drug abuse in Dallas County, TX

A group of citizens under the name IMPACT Garland in Dallas County is actively working to prevent substance use among youth. This group meets monthly to develop drug prevention programs. Together, they focus on awareness so that adults can educate themselves about symptoms of drug use and other issues youth face. They cooperate with local law enforcement and media campaigns to make Dallas County a safer place and prevent unnecessary deaths.
