In 2019 in Whittier, CA, Chief Aviv Bar of the Whittier Police Department, warned parents about the dangers of pills laced with fentanyl. He said that pills being sold are made to look like Xanax but actually contain unknown chemicals and powders, including fentanyl, which is a synthetic opioid that’s 50 times more powerful than heroin. Just one pill can cause permanent damage, overdose, or death, said Chief Bar.

In January of 2020 in Whittier, CA, a 16-year-old girl died from an accidental drug overdose. Witnesses saw two people pulling her out of a car, leaving her unresponsive on the ground. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy showed that the girl died from a mix of fentanyl and cocaine.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Whittier, CA

Residents of Whittier, along with the state of California, are now able to access naloxone, a life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioids.

Funding for the Naloxone Distribution Project (NDP) comes from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHS) and is distributed by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS).

The project’s goal is to address the opioid problem by reducing the number of deaths caused by opioid overdoses. This is done with the use of naloxone. Since October of 2018, over 601,000 units of naloxone were distributed by the NDP. Over 31,750 overdoses were reversed.

The California Public Health Standing Order for naloxone is available to administer or distribute for those that qualify. This includes first responders, police officers, fire departments, Veteran’s organizations, homeless programs, schools, community organizations, and religious entities.
