Some of the many efforts being taken by SafeRx OC to curb substance abuse in Orange County include their Save a Life Drive-Thru events. In October 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new bill aimed at reducing opioid overdose risks among local college students. The legislation comes at a time when Anaheim, alongside neighboring California cities, is witnessing increasing accidental opioid overdose deaths amongst the younger population. In fact, state officials have reported that one out of every five residents ages 15 to 24 who died in 2021 were killed by a fentanyl overdose.
Now, under Assembly Bill 461, California universities and community colleges are required to maintain a stock of fentanyl test strips that can be dispensed to students. This includes Anaheim and Orange County area campuses including but not limited to Coastline Community College, Cypress College, and Fullerton College. These institutions will also be required to provide students with details on the locations and use of these fentanyl test strips to raise awareness and reduce the concern of deadly overdose in the Anaheim area.
