In 2020, the number of drug overdose deaths increased significantly. Compared to 2019, drug overdose deaths were about 38 percent higher. In 2020, 1,477 Coloradans did not survive a drug overdose.

The most considerable increase was in opioid use, which rose by 54 percent in Colorado. Particularly alarming in Colorado is the use of fentanyl. In 2020 alone, 68 percent of overdoses involved fentanyl. From 2019 to 2020, the number of fentanyl-related overdose deaths has more than doubled. Fentanyl is cheaper than many opioids, easily available, and often mixed into other drugs. At about 100 times the strength of morphine, it has led to a surge in drug overdoses and overdose deaths.
Thornton man imprisoned for eighteen years after a drug bust
Undercover investigators scheduled the sale of two kilograms of cocaine from a 28-year-old man from Thornton. Once they made the purchase, police arrested him. Investigators found cocaine in the man's vehicle and an additional 48 kilograms in his apartment, hidden inside the walls. The cocaine was valued at more than 2 million dollars.
Police stated that this was a significant quantity of drugs to be taken off the streets. The Thornton man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 years in the Department of Corrections and another three years of parole.
