Thornton, Colorado: Local initiatives to curb substance abuse

Adams County, through the 17th District Attorney's Office, has one of Colorado's longest-running Adult and Juvenile Diversion Programs. This program focuses on behavioral health interventions as an alternative to court proceedings. It allows non-violent offenders to develop social skills, repay debts, and have their cases dismissed or have records sealed and expunged. It serves as a therapeutic alternative to formal charges for juveniles and adults, with more than 85 percent of participants remaining crime-free three years after completing the program.

In addition to the Diversion Program, Adams County operates several problem-solving courts, including an Adult and Juvenile Drug Court, a Family Dependency Treatment Court, a Juvenile Mental Health Court, and a Veterans Treatment Court. The county also has seven co-responder programs that assist individuals with behavioral health issues at the scene of incidents or service calls, offering support, treatment, and referrals.
