Newport, TN – Drug Testing

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Newport, TN

In February 2023, two Newport residents were arrested with drug charges along with one Detroit man. An undercover drug operation, known as Operation Friday the 13th, included two narcotics purchases, which led to search warrants executed by the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson County S.W.A.T. team, the Newport Police Department, and the DEA. The homes searched were located on Fox Chase Road and Hill Road in Newport. Charges for the three individuals included the sale and delivery of heroin, the sale and delivery of fentanyl, the sale and delivery of oxymorphone, the sale and delivery of schedule 4 controlled substances, and the sale and delivery of cocaine.

Experts Say…

In April 2023, Cocke County Sheriff C.J. Ball spoke about the opioid problem in Newport and Cocke County and how Narcan helps to save lives. “Narcan does save lives,” he said. Ball said that the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office administered Narcan for about 70 overdoses between Sept. 1, 2022, and March 29, 2023. Narcan, also known by the generic name of naloxone, is a life-saving medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Ball said that doctors often prescribe Narcan with narcotics. “It seems to be the safer way to do it,” he said. “There are no side effects, no high you can get from it. All you can do is bring down somebody who is overdosing.” Ball pointed out that drugs like meth, fentanyl, and heroin, come across the border. “But now, all of a sudden, fentanyl is a pandemic.” He said that his officers also carry Narcan for their protection. “We tell them ‘wear your gloves, don’t open the evidence bags,'” Ball said. “Narcan is a good thing to have because you are going to be able to save lives, but it also helps protect us.”
