Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Jefferson City, TN

Rescue 180 is a Jefferson County initiative funded by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services aimed at helping local residents combat their substance abuse issues and return to a positive and productive life. The Rescue 180 coalition operates as a group of community members who follow a mission to raise awareness around substance abuse concerns and implement strategies to combat and prevent irresponsible use.

In October 2019, Rescue 180 received a Drug-Free Communities Support Program grant under the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Jefferson City, TN

Having gone into effect July 1, 2023, SB 0256 made updates to existing laws regarding criminal immunity for those who seek medical assistance during a drug overdose. Under previous Tennessee law, individuals who sought medical attention in the event of an overdose would only be immune from criminal prosecution of drug-related charges if it was their first instance of overdose.

Lawmakers discussed that the existing legislature could prevent many from seeking medical assistance if they overdosed again, which would ultimately result in a higher chance of deadly overdoses. Through SB 0256, local law enforcement now has more discretion to grant criminal immunity to those who seek medical assistance, regardless of the number of previous instances.
