Government and Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Asheville, NC and Buncombe County

Asheville, NC and Buncombe County have become part of a program funded by the local, state, and federal governments to reduce drug trafficking in critical areas of the United States. Asheville, along with the state of North Carolina, is a passageway for opioids and narcotic transportation is being investigated. Investigators are also looking into the recent increase in Mexican black tar heroin.

The North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition offers programs in Asheville to help those struggling with drug addiction. One program offered is the Overdose Prevention Program which hands out naloxone, a drug known to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses.

Experts Say…

Dr. Susan Holman specializes in addiction medicine and confirms that heroin addiction is prominent in Asheville. She said, “We used to think of heroin as just sort of a street drug that only down-and-outs used, and boy, has that changed in the last 20 years. It’s being seen a lot now on college campuses and pretty much everywhere else.”

Barbara Galloway, a substance abuse counselor at the UNCA Health and Wellness Center stated, “In terms of heroin, I don’t think we have an accurate size of the extent, but what we see are students who arrive at UNC Asheville already addicted to pain meds. Then, of course, as college students, they can’t afford to buy OxyContin off the street, so they will turn to heroin as a cheaper alternative.”
