In July 2023, a new law went into effect creating updated penalties for Tennessee drug offenders found trafficking, possessing, or producing fentanyl. Titled the One Pill Will Kill Act, this new legislation now makes it a Class-B felony to possess, deliver, or produce more than 0.5 grams of fentanyl. Such charges could result in Johnson City residents receiving up to 30 years in prison as well as a fine of up to $100,000.

With heightened repercussions, the One Pill Will Kill Act is designed to discourage more people from dealing with fentanyl, as well as reduce the rising number of fentanyl-related deaths taking place across Johnson City and the surrounding state.
