Sevier County CARES (Coalition for Addiction Recovery & Education Services) is a program that combines the efforts of law enforcement, judicial services, local government, recovery centers, the school board, and others to help curb the impacts of substance abuse in Sevierville and the rest of Sevier County. The organization helps promote awareness of the risks involved in abusing prescription drugs and illicit substances. It provides information regarding prevention as well as treatment and recovery resources.

While recreational marijuana is legal in many states, in Tennessee, possession of the drug is still considered a crime. According to the Sevierville-based Schults Law Office, possession, casual exchange, and distribution of small amounts of marijuana are all Class A misdemeanors. However, if the amount exceeds more than half an ounce or an individual has a prior conviction, the penalties can significantly increase and may turn into a Class E felony.

For first offenders, possession of a half-ounce of marijuana or less is punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and/or a maximum fine of $2,500. There is a mandatory minimum fine of $250. For subsequent offenses, the mandatory minimum fine increases to $500.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Sevierville

There are fewer illegal drugs on the streets of Sevierville following the condemnation of a known “drug house” located on Murphy Road, and the arrest of seven people. An execution of a search warrant on the location led to the confiscation of a variety of illegal drugs, including heroin, gabapentin (an anti-convulsant medication), and marijuana. The individuals arrested ranged in age from 29 to 50, and charges included possession of drug paraphernalia, drug possession, and one outstanding VOP warrant. Following an inspection of the home, the City of Sevierville Codes Enforcement Departmentalso determined that the home was “unfit for human occupancy or use.”
