Highland Ranch, CO: Drug abuse trends
Highland Ranch falls under Douglas County, which reported its highest growth of fentanyl-involved overdoses in 2020. Fentanyl was present in eighteen percent of all fatal overdoses. In 2021, the trend continued, and fentanyl was present in sixteen percent of overdoses in Douglas County. Experts reported that the numbers skyrocketed since 2020, when fentanyl overtook methamphetamine and became the leading cause of overdose deaths in Colorado.
Unused or unsecured prescription drugs can also pose a threat to Douglas County. In October 2022, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Highlands Ranch Substation hosted a National Prescription Drug Take Back Event. People who needed to dispose of unused prescription drugs safely could attend this event, and the general public could attend for education about the risks of improper disposal and drug abuse.
Man from Highland Ranch sentenced to Federal prison for drugs trafficking
Six years ago, a 33-year-old man from Highlands Ranch fled to Mexico to avoid persecution for money laundering and distributing over five hundred grams of methamphetamine. He was arrested, deported back to the United States, and pleaded guilty. As of September 2022, he was sentenced to federal prison for five years by Judge Domenico.
“This sentence should serve as a stark reminder for those criminals, whether they distribute addictive and deadly drugs or launder the proceeds, the DEA will continue to use every available resource to disrupt their illegal operations,” stated Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Besser.
