Hialeah, FL: Drug abuse trends

Hialeah is in Miami-Dade County, one of the biggest ports for the entry of many substances. South Florida is the second-largest national producer of hydroponic marijuana, second to California, leading to easy access to marijuana on the streets and lower prices. The South Florida HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) is an organization that was founded due to the high rate of drug abuse in the area. Over three years, South Florida HIDTA recovered about $713 million of illegal prescription drugs and street drugs.

Cocaine is at the top of the list as the most frequently smuggled drug into Miami-Dade County. Although smuggled far less often, next on the list are marijuana and then methamphetamines. In 2021, about 6,571 pounds of cocaine were seized, followed by 1,710 pounds of marijuana and 106 pounds of methamphetamine. Opioids remain the leading reason for drug overdose deaths in the area. Another significant issue is binge drinking alcohol. Of the residents surveyed, 19 percent (or 438,195 people) disclosed that they had participated in binge drinking within the last month.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Hialeah, Florida

The number of people dying due to drug overdose is rising, and local initiatives in Florida are working on curbing the substance abuse issue. One initiative is the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program, which is the single state authority on substance abuse and mental health created by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The primary purpose is to prevent and reduce substance abuse and its harmful health effects.

Another organization is the Hialeah Community Coalition (HCC), which addresses substance use and misuse prevention. The coalition was founded by citizens of Hialeah who work to provide families with a drug-free, safe, and healthy community.
