Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Hialeah DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Hialeah, FL

A child born to unmarried parents does not officially have a legal father. In this case, paternity must be established. Establishing paternity can have multiple benefits, such as:

The child knowing the biological father and his medical history

Having the father's name on the birth certificate

Health and life insurance from both parents

Support from both parents

Possible Social Security, veteran's benefits, or military allowances

In Florida, parents can establish paternity by signing a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity or by legal order, depending on the parents and if both parents agree. If they can not agree on paternity by themselves, they can file a paternity petition to the court and let the judge decide it for them, primarily based on a DNA test. Genetic testing is an easy method that can determine paternity with, for example, a swab test performed with specimens from the alleged father and the child.

Florida woman discovers her son after DNA test

Kristin Schoonveld was looking for her biological dad, so she took a DNA test. She never expected the results would match with her son. Kristin was never pregnant, so it did not make sense to her at first. She thought it must be a mistake. However, it all clicked when Kristin saw his pictures and realized the genetic resemblance. She donated her eggs back in 1994.

The two started to talk. Kristin was searching for her biological parents, too, so she understood the feeling of not knowing where exactly she came from. She decided to meet her son, and it was an instant connection. They agreed to stay in each other's lives and started to establish a relationship.

Kristin also tracked down her biological mother, who said that the father knew she was pregnant. Before Kristin was able to meet her father, he had already passed away.

Kristen described this period of her life as magical, and she felt fulfilled meeting new family members.
