Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Fort Lauderdale, FL
One of the most significant local initiatives in the area is the United Way of Broward County's Commission on Behavioral Health and Drug Prevention. This coalition's primary purpose is to prevent substance abuse and promote mental health, reducing its negative effects on communities, families, and individuals. It also aims to create partnerships between agencies of all different levels and search for new strategies to handle substance abuse and misuse in the community.
Additionally, there is also Operation Engage, which focuses on addressing the opioid drug threat in Broward County communities. Key components of the operation include stakeholder and community gatherings to share the latest information on drug trends and threats, as well as the DEA's Citizens Academy, which fosters collaboration between the DEA and local communities by providing participants with insights into federal drug law enforcement. The initiative also features youth engagement programs, such as the DEA Educational Foundation Youth Dance Program, in partnership with the United Way of Broward County, designed to educate children about the dangers of drugs in a fun and interactive way. Moreover, the DEA will conduct community outreach efforts in the five cities most impacted by opioid misuse and will facilitate prevention strategies like drug prevention training, coalition outreach, prescription drug take-back events, and providing technical assistance to local communities.
