Substance Abuse Statistics for Miami, FL
Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Miami, FL
In April 2021, Miami-Dade County law enforcement and the U.S. Department of Justice announced the largest seizure of methamphetamine the Miami area had ever seen. According to reports, the enormous methamphetamine operation was headed by Adalberto Fructuoso Comparan-Rodriguez, the former mayor of Aguililla, Mexico and leader of the United Cartels in Michoacán, Mexico.
Rodriguez and five of his accomplices imported more than 1,200 pounds of methamphetamine valued at more than $12 million into the Miami-Dade area using various methods. Tactics included hiding shipments in concrete tiles as well as submerged in five-gallon buckets of house paint and sealant that were transported on a semi-truck across the Mexico-Texas border into Miami.
The investigation and prosecution delivered in part of this takedown were carried out by the South Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force. Enforcement officers believe this enormous seizure could prevent numerous drug overdose incidents as well as gun violence associated with cartel activity.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Miami, FL
In July 2018, the Florida legislature enacted House Bill 21 to create new opioid prescribing regulations for health professionals throughout the state. The movement comes as spiking opioid abuse and overdose numbers have been witnessed across Florida. Under House Bill 21, new opioid prescribing limits only allow Miami patients to obtain a three-day supply of opioids for the treatment of acute pain.
The prescriber may extend this prescription to seven days if he or she believes it's necessary, but will need to properly document the exception. For patients dealing with severe conditions, such as cancer and traumatic injuries, new rulings under House Bill 21 do not apply.
