Fort Collins, Colorado, is located just a short drive away from the larger city of Denver, in the middle of the beautiful snow-capped Rocky Mountains. The town itself spans 57 square miles, but residents can often be found exploring neighboring national parks and nature areas such as Pineridge Natural Area, the Horsetooth Reservoir, and Cache la Poudre River Canyon.

Many locals work for Colorado State University, which is located in the town center, as well as UC Health Poudre Valley Hospital, the Poudre R-1 School District, and the city and county governments.
Substance Abuse Trends in Fort Collins
Trends in Fort Collins suggest that many drugs sold in this city are being brought up from Denver or trafficked from other areas using the interstates that cross the city. Despite its small size, Fort Collins’ location marks it as a desirable location for drug traffickers, which has led to a rise in the number of local drug overdoses.
Heroin sells for as little as $10 per dose here, with much of the local supply coming in from Denver. It’s estimated that deaths from heroin in Denver alone have risen to six times what they were in 2004. Police in Fort Collins have joined the Northern Colorado Drug Task Force, to try and root out individuals who are responsible for creating, selling, and distributing drugs locally.
How Drugs Have Affected People in Fort Collins
Since 2019, local law enforcement has been tracking a drug trafficking organization called “Operation La Familia” that was operating in Fort Collins and throughout Northern Colorado. This organization was found to be selling illegal narcotics, as well as prescription opioids, weapons, and equipment for manufacturing and distributing more drugs. In June 2020, the Northern Colorado Drug Task Force finally felt that they had enough evidence to act and executed a sting that brought six of the drug organization’s leaders into police custody.
Law enforcement officers are hopeful that with these individuals in custody, illegal drug distribution in Fort Collins, throughout Larimer County, and even in Denver will be affected. The case is ongoing, and more arrests are expected.
