In 1995, Howard County School District staff witnessed an alarming number of adolescents using illegal drugs and alcohol in and around local schools. In response to the issue, staff created the Eastern Coalition Against Substance Abuse, which would continue to grow through the years to become the nonprofit HC DrugFree in 2004.
HC DrugFree continues to work with local schools, community, and state partners to provide resources and education on drug prevention, treatment, and recovery countywide. Some of these resources include life skills training programs for students as well as a student film festival focused on drug use prevention. The organization also offers safe medication and drug syringe disposal events to combat the spread of substance abuse and the risk of infection that accompanies it.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Elkridge, MD
In 2018, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed the Heroin and Opioid Prevention, Treatment, and Enforcement Initiative which passed a collection of laws to combat the ongoing opioid crisis impacting communities across the state.
