Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Elkridge DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

The Importance of Establishing Paternity in Elkridge, MD

For Elkridge couples who are not married at the time of their child's birth, it's important to understand the importance of establishing paternity in the state of Maryland. Without a legal marriage, only the child's mother will possess parental rights, as the state cannot legally recognize anyone as the child's biological father. For the father to receive legal rights, both parents will need to establish legal paternity.

Outside of providing the father with his legal paternal rights, establishing paternity also further benefits both the child and the mother as well. With two legally designated parents, the child has the opportunity to receive benefits from both parents, including health insurance, inheritance, and veteran's benefits. Likewise, for a mother or father to request monthly child support services, the state will require proof of legal paternity establishment to process the application.

How to Establish Paternity in Elkridge, MD

In the state of Maryland, unmarried Elkridge parents can establish paternity in one of two ways. As long as there is full confidence in a child's paternity and both parents are willing to establish legal paternity, the simplest way to go about the process is by completing an Affidavit of Parentage. This completely voluntary document legally declares the child's father and can be completed at the hospital following the child's birth. In the event that one cannot be completed at this time, the parents may complete one at a later date through the Maryland Department of Health And Mental Hygiene or Division of Vital Records.

In the event of a disagreement regarding paternity, whether it be the refusal to complete the affidavit or doubts in the paternity presumption, paternity will need to be established through a court order. Either mother or presumed father can file a petition to establish legal paternity through a Howard County Family Court. This process will typically include the use of DNA testing to accurately determine if the paternity claim is correct. If results prove accurate, the courts can then legally establish both paternity and child support obligations.

Experts in Elkridge, MD Say…

Following the legal establishment of paternity, an Elkridge parent may need to relocate outside of the state of Maryland. If a custodial agreement has also been established, a parent will need to seek the permission of Howard County Family Court to relocate the child as well. According to Elkridge Family Law Attorney Thomas Mulinazzi, the courts will grant permission for an out-of-state relocation as long as it is in the best interest of the child. This includes the assessment of various factors, including the reason for relocation, age of the child, and the current developmental stage of the child.
